Summer School – It’s Your Turn to Learn: Repetition

Print

Welcome to our final session of MFT Summer School! Based on your feedback, we gathered that you’ve enjoyed sessions one and two, so we’re forging ahead with five more lessons to inspire you. If you happened to miss the first two sessions, HERE is a link to bring you up to speed.

Session one focused on design principles, and session two gave you the tools you needed to confidently create with color. This week we’ll be sharing three design principles and two more color lessons to round out your summer education.

We’re hoping that by the end of the week, our final five lessons will give you the confidence you need to create cards and projects that are pleasing to the eye just by following a few more simple rules and tutorials. It’s never to learn to grow and learn! Are you ready class? Let’s begin.

Lesson #11 – Design: Repetition

The first lesson this week centers around the concept of using Repetition. Repetition is the repeating of visual elements such as line, color, shape, texture, value, or image. Using repetition tends to unify the total effect of a card’s design as well as create rhythm.

Here are two great examples of the use of repetition by Miriam Prantner and Francine Vuillème:

Handmade card from Miriam Prantner featuring the Polka Dot Cover-Up Die-namics.

Miriam repeats colors and shapes in her graphic design.

Handmade card from Francine Vuilleme featuring Birdie Brown's Polynesian Paradise.

Francine masters repetition by repeating an image. The patterned paper at the bottom of the card grounds the design to perfection.

Today’s instructor is My Favorite Things Design Team member Stephanie Klauck. Click HERE or simply watch the video below to learn more about using Repetition in your designs.

I just loved Stephanie’s tips about painter’s tape for masking off the stencil. And her use of the MISTI is awesome! I’m not sure how I ever lived without mine.

Handmade card from Stephanie Klauck featuring the Brushstroke Birthday stamp set.

And here’s her finished product. So fun and colorful! Her repeated colors and dots create a cohesive and pleasing design.

To aid in your learning, we have created a My Favorite Things Summer School Session Three Study Guide. Download it HERE, and then print it. It will be a handy tool that you can refer to as you design!

This week you’re the student, and instead of grades, we’ve got two prizes per day and two ways to win. Using today’s lesson, we’d love for you to create a project that exemplifies what you learned and upload it to the link below. Master the lesson and win a $50 voucher from My Favorite Things and be featured on the blog on August 25th. Just by participating, you’ll be entered into a drawing to win a $20 voucher, so everyone has a chance!
