Summer School – It’s Your Turn to Learn: Primary Colors

Print

We’re so glad to have you back again for the next lesson in color theory! It’s been a fun week so far learning about the Gallon/Quart/Pint rule as well as Complementary Colors and how to use them.

Just to be clear — paper crafting is all about fun and creativity, and while we never want you to feel like there is a right or wrong way to design, we hope that these simple ideas help you in your quest to make cute and colorful stuff!

Today’s lesson feels a little bit like a trip back to elementary school and a fresh box of delicious crayons and a clean white sheet of paper. Let’s dive in to today’s lesson, shall we?

Lesson #8 – Color Theory: Primary Colors

The most basic of colors are primary colors — red, yellow, and blue. See how they create a triangle in the color wheel? From those three colors come all of the rest. Here are a couple examples of cards from Francine Vuillème and Vera Wirianta Yates created with primary colors:

While these colors look great on their own, they are the bulding blocks for creating an entire spectrum of color. Today’s instructor, My Favorite Things Design Team member Stephanie Klauck, shows us how to take red, yellow, and blue to create a cool graffiti wall effect. Click HERE or simply watch the video below to learn more about using the Primary Colors to create many colors.

Stephanie sure makes me want to experiment with some blending. What a fun way to show the power of primary colors!

I love how Stephanie’s card turned out! And now that you know how to achieve this look, you can give it a try as well.

To aid in your learning, we have created a My Favorite Things Summer School Session Two Study Guide. Download it HERE, and then print it. It will be a handy tool that you can refer to as you design!

This week you’re the student, and instead of grades, we’ve got two prizes per day and two ways to win. Using today’s lesson, we’d love for you to create a project that exemplifies what you learned and upload it to the link below. Master the lesson and win a $50 voucher from My Favorite Things and be featured on the blog on July 28th. Just by participating, you’ll be entered into a drawing to win a $20 voucher, so everyone has a chance!
