Summer School 2018: White Space

One of our perennial favorites around here is our Summer School series. Understanding and internalizing different design concepts allows you to bring your ideas to life. With a little practice, these ideas will quickly become intuitive, leading your card designs to come together with minimal effort. Over the course of the next five days, we’ll bring you videos and projects designed to help you understand these basic principles and incorporate them into your own crafting.

The idea of white space doesn’t refer to a primarily white card (though often, as is the case with today’s project, this is true) but rather, the idea of leaving a significant portion of your design open, free from embellishment, allowing your focal point to truly shine.

Today’s instructor is My Favorite Things Design Team member Laurie Willison. Click HERE or simply watch the video below to get some fantastic tips from her about creating a card with white space.

You’ll see in Laurie’s video that she uses the rule of thirds to identify different options for placing her focal point — it’s a great technique for pinpointing where you’ll direct your viewer’s eyes, allowing the rest of the card to act as a “resting” place.
